Media literacy events in Estonia in October 2023

Throughout the month, Laste Aeg OÜ will train the media and information literacies (MILs) of 7-10-year-olds in schools all over Estonia, covering more than 500 young children. Teaching online threats via offline games has proven successful, as Laste Aeg’s team of two has trained more than 3,500 children in the last year.  

Several events will take place in the Baltics, focused on media literacy, digital resilience, and strengthening democracies and active citizenship to celebrate UNESCO MIL week in October 2023. All are in local languages unless stated otherwise.  

  • The Estonian National Library will host a media literacy conference on October 25-26, 2023 in Tartu, Estonia. The conference will focus on developing critical thinking skills and media literacy. In addition to an impressive lineup of speakers and networking opportunities, the conference boasts over 30 workshops to teachers of different subjects in order to help them incorporate MIL as a in their classes.
  • The Baltic Engagement Centre for Combatting Information Disorders (BECID) is hosting a Fact Checking Masterclass for teachers, librarians and youth workers on the 19th of October.
  • The School Film Festival 2023 film festival will take place on October 27-28, 2023. The festival will include film workshops for teachers on how to incorporate audiovisual media education in their classes and workshops for participating students. Organised by the Estonian Film Institute. 
  • The Estonian National Library is hosting a competition for teenagers to engage with Midjourney and create images with and about artificial intelligence.   
  • NGO Wikimedia Estonia in cooperation with the University of Tartu will be organising trainings on assessing the quality of information and writing Wikipedia articles, all MIL-themed. The trainings will be going on the 9., 16., 23., 30. October at 17:30 at Vaksali 17, Tartu, Estonia.  
  • The CGI Estonia company will launch a new Spoofy world on its website on October 24, 2023. Spoofy is an online game for teaching MILs to young children, with different thematic worlds and available in Estonian, Ukrainian, Danish, Polish, Russian as well as English. The Spoofy world will focus on the topics of fake news and fraud.
