FACT CHECK | Kaja Kallas did not sell land to the Soros Foundation to store nuclear waste

Posts are circulating on Facebook claiming that Kaja Kallas sold 420 hectares of land in Estonia to Alex Soros to be used as a dumping ground for toxic waste. This claim comes from a conspiracy theorist and disinformation spreader and is completely false. In the original post, user Virgo Olmet wrote: „Kaja Kallas’ husband ran a 17 million euro transport business in Russia despite the embargo, and the same woman recently met Alex Soros, who is the G. Soros Foundation. The aim of the meeting was to sell the Soros Foundation a 420-hectare plot of land in Estonia where toxic and radioactive waste will be allowed to be buried. The exact location and sale price were not disclosed.“This claim has been shared, for example, by Ülla Vähk, whose posts have been repeatedly checked by Faktikontroll in the past. The post has also been shared by the portal Eesti Eest!, the content of which Faktikontroll has also debunked several times. All the posters point out that the information comes from the channel of the content creator Charlie Ward. Ward is a well-known spreader of disinformation and conspiracy theories. The posts have been shared more than 500 times and have more than 100,000 views.Facts The image referred to is from 2022.As prime minister, Kaja Kallas had no power to sell state land or to grant permission for the storage of hazardous waste on it.The alleged source is known for spreading disinformation and conspiracy theories. The posts point to the Charlie Ward programme, which features, among other things, a segment in which two men – Paul Brooker and Warren Thornton – make absurd claims that they call „news that has gone unnoticed.“ The video was published on 12 February 2025.In the programme, Warren Thornton talks about Kaja Kallas as Prime Minister of Estonia, even though Kallas hasn’t held the post for more than half a year. He suggests that Kallas was recently photographed with Alex Soros, son of George Soros. Thornton then makes a „big revelation“, claiming that Kallas has sold 420 hectares of Estonian territory to Alex Soros so that he can bury dangerous nuclear waste. The presenters laugh that selling your land is a bad thing. No evidence is provided to back up the claims, because there is simply none. The picture referred to as evidence of a „recent meeting“ between Alex Soros and Kallas is from Alex Soros’ Instagram, where it was posted on 20 February 2022. Nor did Kallas, even as Prime Minister, have the right to independently sell land that did not belong to him, much less allow hazardous waste to be buried there. The transfer of state land is handled by the Land Registry, and the disposal of hazardous waste is the responsibility of the Ministry of Climate.Verdict: False. This is a trivial falsehood, but it is still very widespread. Kaja Kallas, as Prime Minister, had no right or opportunity to sell state land or to grant permission for the storage of hazardous waste.
